About the Program

B Bar J Equestrian Training Centre on West Verde Way in Las Vegas teaches riding to kids as young as 4. Owner Gail Powers started the business in 1979, moved it back to Las Vegas in 1983, and teaches the lessons herself, one on one.

Lessons are 30 minutes, once or twice a week, on your own horse or one of the ranch's lesson horses. Riders can learn Western or Hunter (English) style, plus equitation, horsemanship, showmanship, reining and trail. New riders begin in a 65-foot round pen, and group lessons are kept for riders already at an intermediate or advanced level. There are also ground lessons for new horse owners on handling and care.

Two rules to know before you sign up: riders under 18 must wear an approved riding helmet, and riders under 18 who are in school need to keep a 2.5 GPA.

The ranch also boards horses and holds ranch sorting practice every Saturday all year. Call (702) 528-1793 for lesson prices and openings.

First Visit Guide

What most riding programs expect. Confirm the details with B Bar J Equestrian Training Centre before you go.

What to bring

  • Long pants. Jeans work. No shorts.
  • Closed-toe shoes, with a small heel if you have them. No sandals.
  • Water and a hair tie. Barns provide helmets at nearly every lesson program, but confirm.

Before you go

  • Ask about age and weight minimums.
  • Desert barns move lessons to early morning in summer for the horses' sake as much as the kids'.
  • Plan for a waiver and a short barn orientation on day one.

The first visit

The first lesson is groundwork first: leading, grooming, learning to mount. Less riding than your child expects, and that's how the good barns do it.

For sensory-sensitive kids

Barns are calm places with sudden noises, whinnies and gate clangs. A short visit to meet a horse before lesson one goes a long way.
