About the Program

Southern Nevada Conservancy is the Las Vegas nonprofit that runs education programs and visitor services at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, 17 miles west of town, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management. Its interpretive naturalists lead guided canyon hikes, on-site education programs and the Junior Ranger program, and the group says its programs are built for all ages.

Through Junior Ranger, kids learn the science behind the outdoors and what it means to use public lands responsibly. Membership starts at $10 per month and brings 15% off at the Red Rock Canyon visitor center shop. Call the office to ask about upcoming hikes and kids programs before you head out.

First Visit Guide

What most outdoor and hiking programs expect. Confirm the details with Southern Nevada Conservancy before you go.

What to bring

  • More water than you think. A liter per person minimum, more from May through September, because out here heat ends hikes long before tired legs do.
  • Closed-toe shoes, hat, sunscreen, snacks
  • A downloaded or printed trail map. Cell coverage drops fast in the canyons.

Before you go

  • Check park hours and reservations. Red Rock's scenic drive uses timed entry part of the year.
  • Start early. By mid-morning in summer the trails are a hazard, not a workout.
  • Tell someone which trail you're taking.

The first visit

The easiest first outing is a ranger-led family program: short distances, shade breaks, and a guide who knows where the restrooms are.

For sensory-sensitive kids

Open trails are naturally calm. Pack ear protection anyway for windy overlooks, and pick out-and-back trails so your child always knows the way out is the way you came.
