About the Program
The Henderson Symphony Orchestra is a community orchestra that has played around the valley since 1987, and its youth side centers on a competition for musicians up to 18 and a free school concert. It puts on 11 concerts a year and has a long habit of free events.
The Young Artists Competition is open to Clark County residents up to 18, in a Junior Division (up to 14) and a Senior Division (up to 18). Kids can enter as soloists, duets or small ensembles in strings, winds, brass and percussion, or piano and voice. Unlike many youth contests, entrants pick their own piece, but it has to be memorized and played with a piano accompanist, and the orchestra can share names of pianists. The jury picks three winners, two senior and one junior, and each one plays with the orchestra at a regular season concert. The application fee is $40, and deadlines are posted on the site each year.
Concert 4Kids is a free orchestra concert for K-12 public school classes, buses included, where students try instruments and even conduct. It usually happens in April and takes reservations after the New Year holiday, but teachers make the booking, so a parent who wants it for their school should pass the idea to a teacher.
