About the Program

The Mountain Guides run Kids Rock, a private guided climbing class in Red Rock Canyon for kids ages 5 to 12, about 30 minutes from the Strip. Kids learn a few basic knots, how to belay another climber and how to move on real sandstone. A parent or guardian has to come along, either to watch or to climb. For the youngest climbers, ages 5 to 9, the guides pick crags with short approaches and flat base areas.

You can book a half day (4 hours), which suits first-timers, or a full day (8 hours) for kids who want more routes. The price per climber drops as the group grows: a half day is $315 for one climber, $195 each for two and $135 each for six. A full day is $425 for one climber or $265 each for two. Helmets, harnesses, climbing shoes and ropes come at no extra cost.

Because the class is private, you request a date through an inquiry form. Groups usually meet at the Vista Commons shopping plaza in Summerlin. The season runs fall through spring. The gear list calls for 2-3 liters of water, which matters most from April to October, and from November to March bring gloves and a warm hat that fits under a helmet.

After a first class, kids can repeat it or move up to the Intermediate class, aimed at middle schoolers and older.
