About the Program
Las Vegas Capoeira Academy teaches capoeira, the Afro-Brazilian martial art that mixes kicks, acrobatics and live music, to kids as young as 5, a teen group for ages 12-17, adult beginners and whole families. Head instructor Contramestre Viajante has trained since 2004 and is a member of Grupo Liberdade De Capoeira.
A typical kids class runs 60-75 minutes. It opens with a warm-up and ginga drills, moves to kicks and escapes such as meia lua and negativa, then partner drills, music on the berimbau, atabaque and pandeiro, and finally the roda, the circle where students play each other to the music. Along the way kids work on cartwheels and bridges and learn Portuguese capoeira songs. New kids can join any week.
Everything runs on an evening schedule. Kids and adult classes are booked close together, so a parent can train the same night, and some sessions take the whole household at once. Private lessons are offered for kids and adults, and the academy brings workshops and performances to schools, festivals and private events.
Trying a class takes no long-term commitment. Kids come in comfortable athletic clothes, and students who stay on move into the white capoeira uniform, the abadá. Ask about prices and the family-friendly membership options at the trial, or call 845.464.2332.
