Beat the heat

From May through September, metal slides and dark surfaces can get hot enough to burn skin by late morning. Touch the equipment before your kids climb on, and plan playground time for early morning or the hour before sunset. Parks with shade sails over the play area make summer visits much easier.

Picking a playground

Look at the age range first. Many parks have a separate toddler area and another for bigger kids, which keeps the little ones out of the way. Check the signs at each structure for its age range. Restrooms, shade and a splash pad nearby are the details that turn a quick stop into a whole morning.
