About the Program
Nevada Desert Mermaids is a nonprofit artistic swimming club, also known as synchro, that practices at the Pavilion Center Pool in Summerlin and takes girls and boys ages 4 and up. Kids start on recreational teams and can move toward competition as their skills grow.
Recreational Level 1 is for ages 4 to 10 and meets twice a week for 60 minutes. Levels 2 and 3 take beginners 7 and up for two 90-minute practices a week, and the Level 4 Show Team for swimmers 13 and up practices twice a week for 120 minutes. All recreational swimmers perform in the club's Winter and Spring water shows. Kids who want more can try the 12U Novice team for ages 7 to 12, with 3 practices a week totaling 5.5 hours, and competition teams such as 12U AG train about 10.5 hours a week.
New swimmers start with a free intro class that doubles as a tryout, usually Mondays and Wednesdays at 4:30pm. Your child needs to swim already, tread water in a deep pool and be comfortable underwater; if not, the club points families to Aloha Aquatic or Stone Sports for lessons first. Bring a suit and towel, plus a cap, goggles and a yoga mat if you have them. Beyond club fees, each swimmer registers yearly with USA Artistic Swimming: $56/yr for recreational or $106/yr for competitive. July is a break month with no practices.

What to bring
- Swimsuit, worn under regular clothes so changing goes faster
- Towel and a full set of dry clothes
- Swim diaper if your child isn't potty trained yet. Many schools want two layers, so ask.
- Hair tie or swim cap for long hair
- Goggles only if the school says yes. A lot of them teach beginners without goggles on purpose, so kids get used to water on their face.
