About the Program
FIRST LEGO League is a team robotics program for elementary and middle school students across Nevada, including Las Vegas, run by the nonprofit FIRST Nevada; kids design, build and code with LEGO. It is not one location you drive to: children join a team formed by a school, after-school program, homeschool group or community group, and FIRST Nevada supports those teams around the state.
FIRST Nevada runs two of the program divisions. The younger one covers Grades 2 to 4 (ages 6 to 10), with teams of 2 to 6 children building a LEGO model that moves and making a Team Poster, usually in 1.5 hour meetings over 10 weeks. Challenge covers Grades 4 to 8 (ages 9 to 14), with teams of 2 to 10 researching a real problem and programming a LEGO robot to run missions in a robot game, usually in two-hour meetings over 12 weeks.
Fees are per team, not per child. Registration for the younger division is $170, plus a $50 FIRST Nevada season fee for workshops and festivals. Challenge registration is $305 plus a $110 Challenge set and a $150 season fee that includes a qualifier event. Robot kits are a separate purchase that teams can reuse.
Registration opens in mid-May. If your child's school has no team, fill out the Team Interest Form to start one, and ask about team grants.
