About the Program
The Howard W. Cannon Aviation Museum is a set of aviation history exhibits inside Harry Reid International Airport, run by Clark County Parks and Recreation with the Department of Aviation. The main exhibit sits above baggage claim, with more displays spread through Terminal 1, and the exhibits are open 24 hours a day, every day.
The story runs from the valley's first flight in 1920 to the arrival of jets. Kids who like cars may spot the red 1956 Ford Thunderbird convertible, a copy of the crash wagon Alamo Airways used at the airport, which beat the fire trucks to a couple of emergencies. The county's museum page also tells the story of Anderson Field, the first local airfield, which opened on Thanksgiving Day, 1920, near today's Sahara and Paradise. In 1926 the first Western Air Express passengers rode on the mailbags of a Douglas M-2 biplane.
Since the main exhibit is above baggage claim, it is an easy stop while you wait for an arriving flight. Smaller exhibits are also at Henderson Executive Airport and North Las Vegas Airport. Questions go to (702) 455-7968.
