About the Program

Ohana Martial Arts on Southern Highlands Pkwy in Las Vegas teaches martial arts by age group: Island Dragons for Age 3 to 6, Ohana Kids for Ages 7 to 12, and Kahunas classes for teens and adults. It is led by Master Durant, a 7th-Degree Black Belt who opened his first school in 2003, with help from Black Belt Junior Instructors.

Island Dragons has weekday slots such as 4:00 PM to 4:30 PM or 6:00 PM to 6:30 PM and a Saturday class at 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM. Ohana Kids meets on weekdays at times such as 4:30 PM to 5:15 PM or 6:30 PM to 7:15 PM, plus a Saturday class at 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM. Students who move up can join Warriors for advanced belts, a Black Belt Class, and an invitation-only Leadership Class.

New students pick one trial: a free class pass, or 2 weeks of classes, up to 3 a week, for $20. Ask about monthly tuition when you visit. Kids should wear a t-shirt and sweats or shorts, bring water, and arrive at least 5 minutes early to check in on the tablet by the door.

The studio is open Monday to Friday from 3:30 pm to 8:30 pm and Saturday from 8:00 am to 11:00 am. Parents can take adult kickboxing on Tuesday evenings and Thursday mornings.

First Visit Guide

What most martial arts schools expect. Confirm the details with Ohana Martial Arts before you go.

What to bring

  • A t-shirt and shorts or joggers. You don't need a uniform for a trial class. Schools sell or include one when you sign up.
  • Water bottle
  • Shoes that slip off easily, since everyone is barefoot on the mat

Before you go

  • Trim fingernails and toenails. It's a mat rule almost everywhere.
  • Leave the jewelry at home.
  • Arrive 10 minutes early so your child can watch the class before theirs and see how it works.

The first visit

Most dojos run a free or cheap trial. Expect bowing in, warm-ups, and basic stances. Teachers see first-timers every week and will put your child at the back where they can copy the older kids.

For sensory-sensitive kids

Ask about class size and whether there's a slower intro class. The line-up-and-bow structure is the same every single class, and that predictability is exactly why a lot of kids with ADHD or autism end up loving martial arts once it's familiar.
