About the Program

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada, based on South 10th Street in Las Vegas, matches children ages 6 and up with an adult mentor, called a Big, in a one-to-one friendship. The agency runs both site-based and community-based mentoring.

The site-based program meets at a number of CCSD elementary schools and after-school sites. A Big and a Little get together for one hour a week, working on homework or reading and also playing games inside or on the playground. The goals the agency names for these matches are better grades, fewer absences and better behavior at school.

Parents stay involved the whole way. You share your child's strengths and needs, approve which Big is chosen, approve outings, report progress to staff and attend the agency's child safety training. Before a match, the agency says each volunteer goes through a written application, reference checks, an in-person interview and an orientation, and staff stay in touch with the family during the match.

Use the Enroll a Child link on the agency site, and ask how matching works and how long it usually takes.
