The Aquarium at Silverton Casino is a free, open-24/7 reef tank at I-15 and Blue Diamond Road that the casino calls a favorite of all ages. The 117,000-gallon tank holds thousands of tropical fish, along with three species each of stingrays and sharks.
Timing makes the visit. Stingray feedings happen every day at 1:30 PM and 4:30 PM. Mermaids swim Thursday to Saturday from 12 to 8 PM and Sunday from 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM, with a new swim every half hour, but they pause from 3:45 to 5:00 PM. That means an afternoon visit around 1:30 PM can catch both a feeding and a mermaid on the same day, as long as it is Thursday through Sunday.
The Bass Pro Shops on site adds an 18,000-gallon koi pond built to look like Red Rock Canyon, plus tanks of trout, catfish, carp and bass, so you can turn one free stop into two. Parking is free, with self-parking and valet.
Ask about Mermaid School, which puts guests in the tank with the mermaids. Dive Ventures is for certified divers only, at $300 for 30 to 40 minutes on select weekends.
